Rule of law in Hungary: the European Council held a hearing on the values of the Union in Hungary (Article 7(1) TEU procedure). The heaering focused on the independence of the judiciary, the functioning of the constitutional and electoral system, freedom of expression and the fight against corruption. Read more.

Today Filipe César Marques, president of the European Magistrates for Democracy and Freedoms MEDEL, will take a speech at the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs COSAC. During the event, issues such as respect for Rule of law and independence of the Judiciary, and the need to uphold and protect them in all occasions, will be addressed. Read more about the event.

Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary, declares state of emergency over crisis caused by Ukraine war. Measures to be adopted will be announced on Wednesday. After a lost-fight against Brussels for the release of post pandemic recovery funds, this allows government to bypass Parliament, as in pandemic. He pushed through a constitutional amendment allowing his government to rule by decree in situations including when war breaks out in a neighboring state. Read the article.
